Chowan…recorded…1719

(transcribed by Marc Anderson)

(George Fort was from Round Hill…he left the Virginia property to son Elias who witnessed the will of Elizabeth Anderson.  None of the Fort women have been identified to my knowledge which severely hampers my question of George Fort having a sister named Elizabeth?)

(It is speculated William Boon married Elizabeth Fort)

15 July 1720 Elizabeth Boon of Chowan Prect., wife of William Boon to Elias Fort power of attorney to relinquish my Dower in Land sold by my husband to John Bryan, being 100 acres Wit: Samuel Peacock, John Bryan

(William Boon witnessed the will of the father of Elias, George Fort. If his wife was the sister of Elias Fort that would explain the trust conveyed for the POA)

(The Forts, Boons and Andersons are shown to be at least “aquainted” if not interrelated from earlier days in the Round Hill area of Virginia.)

Copy-Chowan deed #470-P 59-60 Elizabeth Fort, wife of William Boon -Power of attorney to Samuel Peacock

(I haven’t checked out this item…possibly William Jr.     source:  http://home.inu.net/sadie/jamesanderson.htm  )

15 July 1721 William Boon of Chowan Prect. and Elizabeth my wife to Benjamin Fort of ye Pect afrsd. 5£ 40 acres more or less on the south side of Maherrin River, joining ye mouth of ye Deep Gutt, a swamp, Long Branch and ye River all houses, orchards etc. now in the actual possession of the sd. 6 Nov 1723 [A 210] Samuel Canady & wife Mary to Elias Fort 15£ for 100 acres on SS Meherrin River purchased of William Boon on 15 July 1721 now in actual possession of Elias Fort.
Wit: Thomas Boon, Isaac Sterling, Robert Scott. Feb Ct 1723

(George Anderson died prior to his wife Elizabeth making her will in 1732, leaving sons James, Carolus and seemingly a third son [apparently deceased] who had a son by Elizabeth Pitman. My theory is that George was living somewhere between Round Hill Swamp and the Meherrin River…all records being lost with the Nansemond and Isle of Wight records.  There is a clear migration pattern of these folks [Boons, Forts and others] to the Meherrin River area…Bertie/Chowan NC)

Around 1702, William Browne and Richard Braswell (brothers-in-law) began eyeing real estate in North Carolina.  By 1706, William Browne had aquired 640 acres in Chowan.

  1. This George Fort is my ancestor and his son, George, is my line. Do you have any other information on this line or on George Fort’s wife Elizabeth. Other than her name, Elizabeth Accobe Duckwood, little seems to be known about her. The son George #2, was married to a Mary and nothing is known of her! Thanks for any help and your site is very informative and interesting. Thank you.

Ever run across a Marmaduke, James or Shadrack Atkinson?

    • Hi Franki
You can download an e-book from Google Books… under 10 bucks I think… Southside Virginia Families, Volume 1 by Boddie… it has some good info on the FORT families. I was more focused on Elias Fort and did not follow George Jr that much… he was obviously around the Meherrin River property and may have moved to Edgecombe. Also see my link for “Bob Baird’s site” under Blogrolls… he mentions the Forts in some of his chronicles… he knows his stuff…. I’ve tried to prompt him to discuss them more but nothing so far.
      I haven’t delved in to any Atkinsons…
