When you see it… Ambrose Bennett’s 750 acre patent… 1641

Young folks today have a pastime called MEMES… goofy little tidbits of nonsense they get a kick out of sharing on their smart phones… another along the same lines is called “When you see it“.  It usually involves a photo with a funny or embarrassing happenstance and unintended side occurrence.

In 1637, in Isle of Wight county, one John Taylor received a patent for 50 acres…

To all… grant John Taylor 50 acres… Isle of Wight… being an Island running up the Pagan shore between two Creeks the one running South East and the other running round the Island bearing to the South west being opposite against the Land of Arthur Smith… due for personal Adventure… 1637

When you see it… it is so obvious as to be humorous… note that the patent verbiage is a perfect description (once you know where to look).

To coin a phrase… Let’s call this Bennett’s Island.

Directly to the West, across what is now known as Champion Swamp, was the patent of the immigrant Christopher Reynolds. Northwesterly was the patent of Arthur Smith. Northeasterly was the land of John Upton.  Ambrose Bennett would obtain this land in 1641.

I had a hell of a time finding the patent… turns out it was not in the early first patents as it should have been.  It wound up in Book 7 with the 1687 batch of patents… for whatever reason that is when it was officially recorded.

A co-conspirator in this mapping enterprise (Jerry Jolly) had access to my notes above and makes an attempt to map the Bennett 750 acres…  Here is his rendition (he uses a different software package).

Note  Jerry’s rendition of the John Taylor patent… his software calculates the acreage.  What I call Bennett’s Island appears to be almost exactly 50 acres.

My only critique of Jerry’s calculation is that I think it is too “literal”. By that I mean the old boys in 1641 were perhaps in a hurry and “roughly” threw out the metes with very few bounds. (These early patents did not show the old boys at the peak of their game in the surveying gig.)  Directly below it was another John Upton patent.  Considering the Bennett patent and this Upton patent I find it impossible to accurately plot. (There is too much detail left out of the original patents).   However the abundant clues makes for the ability to make a reasonably accurate guess.  The tedious association of deeds makes for more accuracy.  I find the more that we map the clearer the “big picture”.

IOW…”beginning at the outside of Ambrose Bennetts Land lying Northerly upon the said branch and 500ac of Land more on the other side of the sd. branch opposite against the foresaid Land running Easterly into the woods beginning at an Indian path which goeth over the head of that branch and runneth Southerly upwards from the head of the said branch…” (no name of the said branch) Lt. John Upton 1500ac 1638

Read the Charles Barcroft patent carefully… a theory of mine is that Cypress Creek branched twice coming out of the “lower bay creek”.  In other words, modern Champion Swamp was also known as Cypress Creek in the early days.  It should be somewhat obvious that  Christopher Reynolds patent was to the WEST of the modern Cypress Creek/Swamp.  See Bennett’s Island.

So what we know for sure is that the Northerly bounds of the 750 acres is the “island”  at the head of the “Lower Bay Creek” as the section of creek was named at the time.  Also the Westerly bounds adjoin the property of Christopher Reynolds (the immigrant). Reynolds was actually across the creek.  The Southerly bounds of the patent are still a mystery.  Some clues are available concerning the Easterly bounds of the patent…

Above is from Boddie’s book… Ambrose Bennett Sr has died by 1657, I think, so this is his son in 1678.  This is the sale of a mill obviously… note where it is- “at the head of Pagan Creek“.  I assert that this is the same creek named “Lower Bay Creek” in Bennett’s 750 acre patent.  The key term, in my opinion, is “head” as opposed to the “mouth” of any creek.  The head is the ending point of a creek.  In this case the Pagan Creek “ends” and Cypress Creek “begins”.  Also of keen interest to me are the people mentioned…  James Tullaugh, James Bagnall, Richard Reynolds and Walter Rutter.    Note that by 1678 James Bagnall had property “adjoining” Ambrose Bennet’s 750 acres.  Bagnall married a daughter of the pastor Robert Bracewell.

If you study my research… I think I have successfully proven “where” the immigrant Christopher Reynold’s property was… as noted above.  Note Richard Jordan’s patent below Reynolds (also note the reference to Cypress Swamp in the patent)- I purport this is proof that the modern Champion Creek was known as Cypress Creek in the 1600s.  Essentially there was a “western” Cypress Creek and an “eastern” Cypress Creek.  This also explains how the large (over 3,000 acre) patent of William Boddie could “begin” on Cypress Creek.

More later…  I am attempting to show where the immigrant Robert Bracewell had his property obtained from John Upton….

“Articles of Agreemt concluded & agreed Between Ambross BENNETT of ye one partie & Thomas WEBB of ye other partie in manner & forme as followeth. Impris it is agreed between ye parties aforesd that ye sd Ambross BENNETT doth give unto ye aforesd Thomas WEBB & his heires forever, one acre of Land, yt he shall erect a Mill upon, & ye priviledge of ye Runn yt ye sd Mill doth stand upon, and it is further agreed between ye parties aforesd, that if in Case the afforesd Thomas WEBB be att any tyme disposed to make sale of ye aforesd Mill, or Acre of Land, the aforesd Ambrose BENNETT or his heirs for ever, shall have the refusall, of ye aforesd. “To all to whome these presents shall come I Sr. John HARVEY Lt Governr &c and &c whereas &c NOW KNOW yee that I the said Sr. John HARVEY Kt doo wth the consent of the Councell of State accordingly give and grant unto Leuft John UPTON one thousand acres of Land, Scituate and being in the Countie of the Isle of Wight adjoining to the outside of Ambrose BENNETT’s land lying Northerly Upon the said branch and five hundred acres of Land more on the other Side of the Said branch apposite against the aforesaid Land running Easterly into the woods beginning at an Indian oath which goeth and the head of that branch and runneth Southerly upwards from the head of the said branch the said fifteene hundred acres of land being due unto him the said Leift John UPTON by and for the transportation of thirty prsons into this Colony whose names are in the Records mentioned this pattent To have and to hold &c dated the 10th of November 1638.

So how to break all that info down to somehow draw it on a map???   Later Braswell will also obtain the rights to a MILL which he bequeaths to his heirs… is it the same mill???  Consider this:

Hopkins book, I think (pg.250)  23 Nov 1713….  William Hunter and wife, Mary Hunter, of Newport Parish to Richard West of the same….  300 acres in Newport Parish (being formerly owned by Robert Coleman of the same and now in the tenure of the said William Hunter) on Backbay Creek whereon Webbs Mill doth stand by and known as Tullagh Mill and Longs Mill now Wests Mill along Herring Branch to the Great Road.  Land is bounded by James Benn, the Widow Long, Robert Clarke, Thomas Wright and the Reedy Branch.  The land was lately Escheat.

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I consulted the 1865 Civil War map for IOW:


I had hoped to find a mill… no such luck.  But note the REYNOLDS descendant at this time.  Also note that Cypress Creek is labeled on the “western” side where modern Champion Creek is now.  The yellow area is what I take to be the Main Road.

I Googled a modern map but it shows too much modern changes to be any help.

So where was Webb’s Mill in the mid 1600s???

Those People

The humble and gracious Robert E. Lee referred to the invading army of the first tyrant of the corporate “United States” as “those people”.   Boy did the “South” get screwed between 1787 and 1861… but I digress…

I was born a poor white person in Snyder, Texas in 1951….  “poor” is a relative term… as my parents always made sure I was fed.  They were “Depression Era” folks who really knew what hunger was.  I remember an argument once where my mother accused my father of having the luxury of being able to eat chicken.  But I digress…

Your humble author… “me”… felt a need to relate my past to acquaint  you with my confusion with the term “removed”……. in the term as this is slung around as if some one actually knows what the hell it means…

I mean really… is there a way to relate this in a simple manner where a dumb Texan can understand it?

Per the article above, it seems some people actually enjoy typing… I don’t… I look for a simple understanding with as few words as possible.  As an example, think of it as “what the hell did I just say to justify why a fist is headed for my jaw”?

Charles City County Order Book, 1692-1700

A portion of the Charles City County Record Book, 1692-1700, taken from the Charles City courthouse in 1862 during the Peninsula Campaign of the Civil War, was returned to the Library of Virginia in 2016 by a Pennsylvania family who had cared for it for over three decades. It was reunited with another portion of the record book that had been returned to Virginia decades earlier.


The order of these images are interrupted as the transcriptions come online.  Use the search box for the finished ones.  This is pretty cool.  The transcriptions from the search are not only from the Charles Citty records but other records as well.


I’m bogged down with work and haven’t had time to properly search these new documents.  My main interest is the hope of finding new info on a James Anderson of this time period.  He vanishes about mid 1690s. (He was associated with James Thweat and others).

Meanwhile I did find this mention of a will for one Joseph Wall… much controversy concerning the WALL families still perplexes us.  This is a fresh bone to chew on…

Ah… a tidbit…


This is “smoking gun” proof that Mathew Anderson was the son of Reynard Anderson.  I suspect this James Anderson is his brother- 1. because Ten pounds “Money” was changed hands. 2. because the land was formerly James Thweatt’s.  James Anderson married the daughter of Thweatt (Elizabeth).  It is possible however, that this James is the nephew of Mathew.

The author of the site (Patrick Anderson) has purported that James Anderson, son of Reynard Anderson, died before 1704. Further he speculates that he had sons and they became wards of Mathew Anderson (his brother).  The evidence points to that conclusion. 

My interest has been to track these folks to see if any may have migrated to North Carolina.  My efforts have found only one in the Colonial Period. That would be one John Anderson who had property near modern Halifax.  He did not remain and returned to Virginia, leaving a will.  At this point I have to conclude that the James Anderson near the Halifax area from about 1716 to the mid 1720s is not one of these Virginians.  I am left stumped.

Another track of raw research, particularly for these new records from Charles Citty, is the STURDIVANT line.  The immigrant Sturdivant was an Indian Trader employed by William Byrd II… he was killed while out trading and it is an interesting tale.  But more to my research, he likely had an ANDERSON who married into his line. I suspect that there is a connection of that Anderson to the Peter Anderson clan who settled near Halifax, NC.  Somehow there seems to be a connection to the Prince George County, VA Andersons and Halifax, NC.  So my hunt continues…


And so, interestingly and oddly enough, after my notes above, and as I transcribed another of the Charles Citty documents… I find this mention of a Sturdivant… and on the same page a note of the death of Mathew Anderson.  So I am again dumbfounded.  Is this the older Mathew Anderson, son of Reynard, or is it a son of James Anderson.   (note the mention of “6 diaper napkins”… seemingly a reference to a baby)

And note each document refers to the same third person-   James Savoker (Saveker)

Know all men by these presents yt I Elizabeth Sturdivant of ye prish of bristoll in Charles Citty County have made ordained Constituted & appoynted and by these psts doe make ordaine Constitute and apoynt Robert Bolly of ye same parish & County Govt my true & Lawful attorney for me and in my stead and name att ye next Court att Westover holden in & for ye County of Charles Citty aforsd then & there for most in my name to Deliver & acknowledge as my act & Deed unto James Savoker or his Assignes one Indenture Whereunt[o] Thus already sealed bearing ognall date wth these pnts and made between Chischester Sturdivant & ye sd Elizabeth his wife ye one part and ye aforsd James Sovoker of ye other part. This Chichester Sturdivant is a known son of the immigrant John Sturdivant (the Indian Trader killed while out trading).

So the clues are in these new records… (I ran across other references to the Sturdivants and have to re-find them… they have to be transcribed before they can be searched… hint, hint)…   

A Mathew Sturdivant and Biggins Sturdivant relocated from Prince George, VA to Halifax, NC…. also staring you detectives in the face is the fact that a Sturdivant descendant had a middle name of ANDERSON… hence my suspicion that an Anderson daughter from Prince George married into the family.  Who was she?

Henry Anderson/Lovey Staton … ver 2.0

My earlier thoughts are here…

It is assumed that Henry relocated to another county sometime after 1830.

I am now playing with the theory that this Henry Anderson “might” be a son of George Anderson Sr. or another son of William Anderson d1789. While a son Henry is noted in William’s will of 1789, he is nowhere to be found in this 1791 Inventory where all of the others are noted (excepting Absala Vaughn whom we suspect has died).  But then it may be assumed his legacy is written in the will as “land”; therefore no need to mention.


I am “convinced” there was only one George (born 1756) and his son George Jr (born 1798).
I think the census bears that out… however, I think it is obvious he had a “first” family.

In this Rev War deposition, George Jr (b. 1798) relates that HIS mother left 6 living heirs. This is 1853 and they are all living in Tenn. George Jr is petitioning (he was denied) for a year of pension money he felt was due his mother.

On August 1, 1853 in Henderson County Tennessee, George Anderson filed a claim for the pension due his father from September 4, 1836 to September 4 1837 and the amount due his mother, Jane Anderson, as the widow of a revolutionary war pensioner; that his father died in Henderson County Tennessee the last of August 1837; that his mother Jane lived until the last of March 1838 and was survived by six living heirs, George Anderson, John Anderson, Nancy Anderson, now Nancy Halions [?], Rebecca Anderson, Sally Anderson, now Sally Taylor, Polly Anderson now Polly Lee.

So above is the complete “Second Family” of wife Jane.

In the 1800 census son George Jr is shown (born 1798) but son John is not born until AFTER 1800 so he is not shown but there is clearly an older male. That son is clearly in the 1790 census.

Also I am thinking that the  female in 1790 may be a daughter?
Note the older (daughters?) in 1810.  (between 16 and 26)


So… gathering my thoughts……. George Sr is about 20 in 1776… exits Rev War about 1781… age about 25/26.

Starts his first family about this time… per the 1800 census, the son is under 16… so possibly born 1786/7.


As long as I have been playing this genealogy game… about 17 years now…this JUST NOW resonates in my mind.  Once you realize it then it is something you look for. (To be crass… the old boys did not have birth control and for that matter, more kids to maintain the homestead was a GOOD THING.) 

It was fairly common for either a husband or wife to die and they QUICKLY REMARRIED…

According to the Will abstract below Lovey Staton was married before 1813.  (I assume this is a mistake of the name ANDREWS for ANDERSON… it clearly reads ANDREWS in the document however).  It has been reasonably proven that this is a mistake.

So (gathering my thoughts again and thinking out loud)… considering the 1790 and 1800 census info… George Sr appears to have a son (or other possible relation) seemingly born about 1786ish (under 16 in 1800).

I do not know who that person was. But according to the deed above and this deed below it cannot be the Henry Anderson who married Lovey Staton.


Refer my map here… I consider this overwhelming proof of Henry Anderson disposing of part of his INHERITED property from his father William Anderson d1789.  This also seems to prove that the widow Mourning (Price) Anderson has died by 1795.   As much as I fumble with theories, this simply cannot be denied.

My thoughts are that the Henry Anderson/Lovey Staton is the brother of George Anderson Sr.

So who is the male in the 1790/1800 census?  And who are the older females?

Some more speculation… unless and until any new facts emerge that there was another George Anderson south of the Tar River near Faulks Branch just after the Revolution then I have to assume that it is my ancestor who was married to a “Rachel” prior to his marriage to Jane (maiden name unknown).


Bottom line… per the will of William Anderson d.1789, there is nothing specific to arrive at a birthdate for his son Henry Anderson.   So he is still somewhat of an enigma.

Perhaps one of my most absurd questions of all time… is it possible that these were 2 different Henrys in the 2 deeds above? (24 Dec 1795 and 24 Feb 1801).

Two young sons, born between 1810 and 1820.  Jesse Staton Anderson was born 1812.  If the age of Henry Anderson who died 1856 is correct, he cannot be the son of Henry and Lovie…. however, you know how those ages are.

Allen Jones dies by 1831…
“To the Court… 1831 The Petition of James Griffin in right of his wife Rachael and Nancy Jones humbly complaining sheweth… that Allen Jones the brother of your petitioner departed this life on the day of 1831 without issue seized and possesed of a tract of land adjoining the land of James S. Battle, Henry Austin & others that your Petitioners and Polly Worril are the heirs at Law of the said Allen Jones– Your Petitioners further shew that Polly Worrel is a new resident, who they pray may be made defendant to this petition and that publication be made in some public print for the said Polly to appear [] — Your Petitioners are desirous to have said Lands divided and pray your Worships to appoint five freeholders who or a majority of whom shall make partition thereof and make returns under their hands and seals of the proceedings by their hand and divide this behalf…”
I “suspect” that Polley Worrel above “may” have been the wife of Josiah Worrell?… this is merely a theory… Josiah may have hightailed it? (he seems heavily in debt and under pressure)  This seems to be a Polly Jones (daughter of Allen Jones). And in the petition above she is noted as “a non resident”.

There is a 1831 marriage certificate for Zachariah Griffin and Margaret BRAKE so this seems to be a later marriage… (first wife unknown to me)

I have found no will or inventory for a James Griffin… he just vanished.  But if he moved, who are the “heirs of James Griffin” mentioned in Zachariah’s will?
Question- did Oney (Aney, Annah, etc) Griffin remarry a ____ HILL and have children?
And of course… adding to the confusion… a William Griffin sells 40 acres to a Henry Anderson in 1838… (the consensus of researchers is that Henry Anderson/Lovey Staton have removed from Edgecombe County by this time)

Sticking in my craw at this point is another odd reference of the Zachariah will of 1837 (above)…
“heirs of Oney Hill”
No James is connected with this family at this time…???   This is 1813…
Griffin, William will, Edgecombe Co., date of will 12 March 1813, date proved May Ct. 1813, In the name of God, Amen… “ I give my loving wife” (unnamed) all things on my plantation stock, household & kitchen furniture during her life, except the mare bridle and saddle, one bed and furniture which my wife (Oney) Griffin may dispose of as she chooses after her death property left to be divided between my loving sons Zahariah Griffin, John Griffin, Lewis Griffin, and Sealah Long and Ann Eliza Hardy, Mike Williams & Joseph Williams my (my scratched out), Alsa (possibly also) John Peal my children and grandchildren. It is “my wish that my son, John Griffin shall not be interrupted by any person except his mother and to go and and to manage the farm and land as he may think proper”; executors Zahareah Griffin and John Griffin; signed William Griffin (X), wit. Zachariah Griffin appears to be the son of this William Griffin… could it be that James Griffin/Rachael was Zachariah’s son?   If so, then it seems to me he would be relatively young if he also dies by 1837?
Per his will of 1837, Zachariah leaves “residue” to: heirs of James Griffin, heirs of Oney Hill
Did his mother remarry and leave other heirs?  Half-siblings as it were…
I make no claim to be a Griffin expert… a little help from any Griffin kin?
Or did Oney die in 1818… or is this a sister?
A point for my ANDERSON research friends is that if this James Griffin is relatively young when he dies then his wife Rachael would likewise be young…   any comments?
I think any reasonable person would agree that James Griffin married Rachael Jones. Per the above notes… so what to make of this?  (there is no marriage record we have found)

This is probably my overly suspicious nature but why did they not list the last name of Rachel on the formal side of this certificate?
The “big question” for my ANDERSON researchers is that since this Rachael appears to be the sister of Allen Jones, is she a blood JONES or a blood ANDERSON with some quirky half-this or half-that relationship?   Could this be a genealogy “curve ball” where this Rachael ANDERSON dies and James remarries to Rachael JONES?    Or vice-versa?

(sic)    This reference is why I am interested in the age of this Rachel… she has grandchildren in 1820…
All of these Rachaels are why we are tearing our hair out trying to differentiate between these people…

Henry (X) Anderson to Josiah Worrell

For $275 and 25 cents, 91 3/4 acres where the said Henry Anderson now lives, on the south side of the Tar River, on Folks Branch, adj. Henry Austin, Folks Branch, Rachel Anderson, James Battle, and George Anderson.

This ¾ of an acre looks suspicious.  It makes me wonder if indeed this is Henry son of 1789 William, and he has now sold all of Mourning’s dower lands.  True, it is “off” by four acres – but that doesn’t worry me a lot.  If we are right, then now Henry son of 1789 William only owns 120 acres on Buck Swamp.

William Griffin to Henry Anderson

For $110, 40 acres on the north side of Falk’s Branch, lying on the branch and adj. James S. Battle and Elizabeth Griffin.

Wit.  Robert Bryan, John W. Cahoon

This could be the Henry who married Martha Brake.

DB 22/426 16 Dec 1839

Whereas in his will, Zachariah Griffin requested that certain of his lands were to be sold by his executors Jesse C. Knight and Margaret Griffin, the following sale was made:  For $437, the said executors sold to Henry Anderson 134 ¾ acres at the fork of Brake’s Branch, adj. the Grapy (Grassy?) Branch, Johnson’s corner, and Thomas Griffin.

Wit.  John Garrett, B.F. Knight

This is definitely the Henry who married Martha Brake.  It’s getting late for it to be Henry son of 1789 William.

Henry (Z) Anderson (signed as Harry Anderson) to Elizabeth Anderson

For ____, 40 acres on the north side of Falk Branch adj. said branch, James S. Battle, said Elizabeth Anderson, being land Henry Anderson bought of William Griffin.

Wit.  C.B. Killebrew. William Simmons

This could be the Henry who married Martha Brake.

DB 39/179 24 Nov 1851

Sheriff’s Sale of 100 acres adj. R.S. Petway, William Brake, and William Worsley, Jr., sold to Henry Anderson, for eight dollars.

I have no clue – if this is the Henry who married Martha Brake, then he got rid of this land before his death.

DB 30/734 22 March 1867

Because of a case in the Court of Equity, Spring 1861, by George Anderson, Joseph J. Anderson, Mary Anderson, and Barshaba Anderson, infants with their guardian Churchwell B. Killebrew, versus Wright Williams and wife Helen, it is shown that a parcel of land was ordered to sold to make a division among the said petitioners and the said Helen, all children of Henry Anderson, deceased.  Land was 134 ¾ acres, lying on Deloach’s Branch and adj. George W. Killebrew and James H. Griffin.  Land was sold to William Norfleet for $750.

Interestingly enough, William Norfleet was son of the Isaac Norfleet who bought all the land from the heirs of 1801 Henry.  This William Norfleet was born 1814, died 1871, never married, and was a lawyer.  When he died, he left all his lands to two former slaves.


If this is the James Griffin I discuss, it may offer some clues…



Here I go theorizing again…

If the sister of Allen Jones,i.e.,  Rachel Jones, married an unknown ANDERSON and that husband died… she would be Rachel (Jones) Anderson to explain the marriage of James Griffin in 1825.  In other words:    Rachel (Jones) (Anderson) Griffin after the “apparent” death of James Griffin prior t0 1837.  A twice-widow by 1837.

My friend Joani Taylor has noted an Allen Jones mentioned as a grandson in the 1788 will of Gregory Stallings.  If such is the case he perhaps would be of the 1780ish generation.  Since Rachel is his sister she also would be of that generation (unless some quirky second marriage- second family goofiness).  Thus making her an older woman in 1825.

Can that explain this?:

from Watson’s “Kinfolks”… Deed Book 17, page 246 May 1, 1820 Rachel Anderson makes a deed of gift to her daughter Elizabeth Anderson and to her grandsons Bennett Anderson, George Anderson, and Gralndes Anderson. (sic)

If so… who was her deceased husband?

Is there a plausible explanation for no estate papers for James Griffin?

The Estate Sale of Allen Jones is a Who’s Who of Andersons in this area…  including a Henry Anderson and a Gary Anderson.  Also a suspicious Rachel Griffis?

The will of Gregory Stallings 1788 (highlighting Allen Jones and Stalling’s daughter Rachel m. ____ Jones.  It makes sense that a daughter would be named Rachel also…


As I keep deluding myself that I have a concrete clue to build upon to figure these folks out, another roadblock shows up…

As I mentioned above:  the mystery Rachel Griffi”S” (as opposed to “GriffiN”.  Is this intentional or a misspelling?

In 1830 she is HH, between 50-60 years old.  In the deed of division of the estate of Allen Jones she is clearly referenced as “adjoining”. And the different spelling is present for her and James Griffin/Rachel Griffin.   My assumption is that she is a separate woman entirely with an utterly aggravating last name.  Who in hell is she?

Her notes-

Remember William Griffin had the land from Catherine Williams Jones, wife of Allen Jones, they had no kids, she married William Griffin and kept her dower, Allen’s siblings got the rest of his land

William Brake was married to Catherine Griffin, Williams Griffin’s sister the mortgage was to nephew James H Griffin, son of Jane Waller and Thomas Griffin, another brother. Thomas Griffin lived next to Reuben Johnston too.

Henry R was living on the land he traded Josiah Worrell

(this slave transaction substantiates Catherine (Williams) Griffin and the note of her death)…

a Pond in Isle of Wight…

No, seriously, a damn pond has me all in a mental turmoil… the question with myself is could a “particular” pond be 400 years old?  Bear with me – I’ll get to it.

Hugh Campbell… who the hell was this guy?  He shows up around 1685 or so? and starts buying up more damn property than Rush Limbaugh has sponsors on his radio show.

A nice guy… he gives away land in 3 counties for “schools”.   The counties were IOW, Nansemond and maybe “Norfolk” wherever that was “officially”? Say around 1700.

But back to the damn pond… later.

Several years ago I “mapped” Robert Pitts patent… and dutifully wrote all my words of wisdom about his doings and the aftermath of all his doings and his descendants.  Little did I realize that I was talking out of my ass. (for lack of a better terminology… I’m a ground to earth kind of guy).

This Hugh Campbell guy swoops in and buys ALL the land of Robert Pitt.  Coll Pitt was a hotshot from England with entangling alliances which leave his descendants all aquiver with “stuff” which is just plain fun genealogically.

But I draw maps.  I get distraught and upset when  some interloper comes in and messes up my damn maps.

Here… just look at the proof…


See that 1200 acres that the good Coll Pitt acquired?  I worked my ass off to figure out where that nifty little curved arrow DEFINED where this land actually was.  This patent, in my opinion, can be considered a first proof.  Go ahead… bring up an expert to refute me.  I dare you.

And now I confront this… Mr Campbell buys the said property.  What 1699? 98?… I don’t give a damn… he bought the whole damn property!  (45 YEARS later)


Look at it!

So every thing that you and I thought about this particular patent (‘land’ in common terms) is brought into QUESTION.  What we thought we know ain’t necessarily so. (Considering his descendants.)

The damn POND will be the proof of where Giles Driver and Ambrose Bennet had their land.

Like I stated…I’m a mapper… south of here is a pond I think is 400 years old which will tell the tale…

If I can do it…  I will map Ambrose Bennett, Giles Driver and Robert Bracewell… it all depends on the “pond”.  If my hunch is correct.

Oh…  here is the pond… use Google maps to find it…


My simple reason for thinking it may be 400+ years old is the feeder creek leading to it…   from Cypress Creek

Oh… and no one to my knowledge has ever been able to do what I am attempting here,,,  so I have that going for me…

My IOW map is “not ready for prime time” and I am still revising away.  But I just got this comment and have a few things to say…

In my research of the Jolly family I found a land grant in Bertie Co., NC issued to Thomas Goodson 150 acres south of the Maherrin River Dec. 1, 1727. ………”Beginning at a pine Thomas Boons corner tree standing in the Wild Cat Swamp……..” Thomas Goodson married Elizabeth Jolly who was the daughter of James Jolly of Isle of Wight Co., my 6th great grandfather. When Thomas Goodson died in 1761 he and his family lived in Tarboro, NC. His will stated that he left half of his lot No. 57 in Tarboro to his daughter Winne and the other half to his wife Elizabeth.

William Jolly of IOW just happens to be on my radar, along with some other folks. And they are all centered around The Pond.  The Pond is noted by the asterisk:


The base map is dated about 1920 or so… making those ponds at least 100 years old.

If I can “accurately place” Ambrose Bennet’s 1641 patent then all the other landowners will fall in place and I can merrily proceed with my mapping.  My ranting about Robert Pitt’s 1654 patent is another milestone.  Hugh Campbell purchased his land in 1698/9.  So that is accurate… the metes and bounds of his freshly minted patent 45 years later is verbatim .

Robert Coleman purchased 300 acres of Ambrose Bennet’s land in 1667… and you can see it represented above.  Coleman’s patent noted The Pond. Likewise with Hugh Campbell’s later purchase of the same land in 1699.  Likewise William Jolly’s patent mentions it in 1704.

A major difference to Campbell’s later patent can be seen (I have both patents shown on the map above).   And the difference is purchases which involved Giles Driver.  Hugh Campbell also purchased part of Giles Driver’s land.  Just as with a jig saw puzzle, I need to have those “anchor points” to connect the other pieces.

So these are the hoops I am jumping through to sort out the map.  Good Grief.  But a good thing about all these mysteries is the tantalizing revelations which are revealed… as to my commenter, just look at William Jolly and his neighbors after 1700. Note Mary Jolly (Corne Swamp) and the earlier John Jolly.  Good clues…
